  • 5 pounds apples (5 pounds before peeling and coring)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for brushing on pie)
  • 1 tablespoon raw sugar (for topping pie)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. Zest and juice the lemon into a skillet.
  3. Peel and slice apples into uniform pieces.
  4. Combine apples with brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg in the skillet over medium heat.
  5. Cook covered for about 20 minutes until apples are tender.
  6. Stir in vanilla and let the filling cool completely.
  7. Roll out the first pie crust into a deep-dish pie dish.
